One of my favorite products to try out is definitely foundation – a good foundation is a total game changer for your look!
A little background about my skin & foundation preferences before we get into this foundation review:
- My everyday HG foundation is NARS Sheer Glow foundation (shade Santa Fe)
- I prefer medium coverage foundations with a satin finish – to me, matte foundation makes my face look more textured
- I have combination skin – occasional breakouts, some dry spots, my T-Zone gets oily by the end of the day
- My skin naturally has some redness on the cheeks and nose, but it’s not super pigmented or hard to cover.
I was really excited to put this foundation to the test – my previous drugstore foundations have all been L’Oreal so I had no previous ideas about CoverGirl foundation products. I like that it has some SPF in it as well as antioxidants. This foundation retails for $9.99 on Amazon ($11.99 at Ulta!), which is always a plus!

The Hand Swatch Test:
I tested it out in a swatch on my hand and the foundation oxidized to an orangey shade after a couple of minutes. This crushed my dreams a little bit for actually trying it out on my face, but I decided to give it a go anyways since I already owned it.
Besides the oxidation, this foundation seemed very light weight and blendable based on the swatch. This foundation definitely has a scent to it, which may bother some people. It’s not an unpleasant scent, it smells exactly like makeup remover wipes to me.
I also love that this drugstore foundation has a pump! That’s one thing that makes me sad about my NARS foundation – I always pour out too much and waste it. The pump on this makes it so much easier to dispense the right amount!
The Application Test:
I gave this foundation the best chance by using my normal foundation routine. Before application, I applied my usual Clinique Dramatically Different Gel Moisturizer. I don’t usually use a face primer unless it’s a special occasion, so I followed suit today and skipped the face primer. I DO spray my face with the Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray before I apply my foundation to prime my skin – and I actually think this is a good primer!
I use the Real Techniques Sponge and always get it damp in the sink before using. I have found that this really helps to blend my foundation.
This application video is super short, but I’ve included it to show my natural skin sans foundation for coverage comparison.
This foundation applied really nice with my dampened Real Techniques sponge – it was super easy to blend out! It definitely has a satin finish, which I like in my foundation and the color match for me was pretty good! I was really surprised that it didn’t oxidize on my face, because it did when I swatched it on my hand.
After applying my foundation, I applied concealer, bronzer, blush and highlighter. I ONLY powder under my eyes on top of my concealer, just so my mascara doesn’t transfer below my eyes. I didn’t powder anywhere else on my face. I finished with another mist of the Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray.
I couldn’t really smell the scent of the foundation after applying, but you may if you have a sensitive nose.

These photos were taken around 10 AM… I’m in dental school and put on/take off masks several times a day, so I really put this foundation to the test!
Sidenote- These photos were taken with my iPhone 7 Plus and I’m so impressed with the quality! Just thought I would share 😉
The Wear Test:
Here is the result of me at 6 PM after a full day of dentistry – next to a window for natural lighting. Looks pretty good to me – aside from the eye bags and tired smile 😉 I didn’t get super shiny on my forehead (a plus!), and I can still see some of the foundation. Typically it will rub off on my nose from wearing masks, but this looks like it has some staying power to it. I can see some of my natural pigment showing through on my cheeks and nose, but not too bad for a drugstore foundation.
I’ll definitely continue using this foundation 1) because I actually really like it! and 2) because I just ran out of my NARS foundation, so receiving this to test was perfect timing! 😉
